Our Mission

Whiterock Conservancy's mission is to protect and restore the area’s diverse habitats, promote sustainable agriculture, and to engage people with the outdoors.  Through land protection and conservation, experimental agriculture, and outdoor recreation we aspire to model and promote an ecologically and economically sustainable Iowa of tomorrow.
Whiterock Conservancy was formed in November 2004 in coordination with the nonprofit Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture of Iowa State University and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, furthering their missions of land preservation, biodiversity, environmental education, outdoor recreation and sustainable land management.
Each group is represented by a seat on the 7-person Whiterock board. The Whiterock Board of Directors includes Fred Kirschenmann of the Leopold Center (president); Lyle Asell of the Department of Natural Resources;  Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation president Mark Ackelson, and Robert G. Riley, Jr., of Des Moines, IA. The Garst family is represented by Liz, Rachel, and Jennifer Garst.
