About the instructor
Dean is a Coon Rapids, Iowa native, and has been a long-time tent camper and nature photographer. Having had the opportunity to spend time in nature, both in Iowa and other locations, has given him access to some great photo opportunities. But home is Iowa, and its landscapes at Whiterock Conservancy have always proven to provide great images. He received a degree in commercial photography and spent more than 40 years in the industry. The first half of those years was in the custom photo lab business, serving photographers and advertising agencies, processing countless rolls of film, prints and slides. As digital photography took over, and the lab business subsided, he returned to the studio and spent the next 20 years as a commercial photographer producing thousands of published photos in books and magazines, ranging from gardening to tractors, quilts and woodworking. Oh, not to forget the sign language for babies guide. He’s shot a lot of stuff along the way. Through it all, he has always been an outdoors person and still enjoys camping and hiking with cameras. Even if a photo outing results in few great photos, he believes just watching and listening is worth the time. He has shot Nikons personally since the mid 70’s, but was issued Hasselblad and Canon equipment for work assignments for many years. In the last few years he has been dabbling in time-lapse photography.
