Dark Sky Exploration at Star Field
Address: 1523 140th St Coon Rapids, IA 50058
Our Star Field Campground is not just for camping! With one of the darkest skies in Iowa - we are free and open to the pubic for stargazing all year long! Located on the edge of a gorgeous woodland and oak savanna, Whiterock Conservancy's Star Field provides privacy and amazing nighttime views of the sky.
Leave the noise and glow of everyday life behind and step into a night unlike any other at our certified dark sky campground. As the sun dips below the horizon, a breathtaking transformation begins - one where darkness isn’t something to fear, but something to embrace. With minimal light pollution, the sky reveals its full brilliance: thousands upon thousands of stars scattered like diamonds, constellations standing out in vivid clarity, and the Milky Way stretching overhead in a luminous band you have to see to believe.
Whether you’re an avid astronomer with a telescope or simply someone seeking a quiet moment of wonder, our Star Field offers the perfect setting to reconnect with nature. Spend your evening identifying constellations and watching for shooting stars. On especially clear nights, you may even catch glimpses of planets, satellites drifting silently overhead, or the soft glow of distant galaxies.
Our dark sky status means we are committed to preserving the natural beauty of the night. Thoughtful lighting throughout the campground ensures safety while protecting the integrity of the sky above, creating an environment where the stars truly take center stage. It’s not just camping—it’s an experience that reminds you how vast, peaceful, and awe-inspiring the world can be.
So bring a blanket, friends and family, and simply look up! Here, under some of the clearest skies you’ll ever see, you’ll find more than stars - you’ll find perspective, tranquility, and a sense of wonder that stays with you long after the night is over.
