Identify Plant Species at the Historic Garst Farmstead with Our Key Out Guide!

Have you ever wanted to learn how to identify plants or animals on your own, but aren't quite sure where to start? Learn the process with Green Iowa AmeriCorps member, Aubrey Brown, as she teaches you how to use of a plant ID key in the video below.

But what exactly is a key out guide? Scientists often use resources called 'keys' to identify a plant or animal down to the species level. One type of key is the dichotomous key, where you answer a series of questions, each with only 2 answers, in order to narrow down the species you are looking for.

This key was designed for use at the Historic Garst Farmstead Ponds. The best time to use this key is mid to late July for the bloom season of the flowers listed. Not all plants found in this area are included.

Interested in keying out other species? Check out the Minnesota Wildflowers online field guide.
